Makita Battery 7000
Cordless drill is making their way into construction and renovation field nowadays with their portability and amazing power. What bothers the users the most is the battery used whether they are long lasting and the durability. Makita 7000 is a 7.2V rechargeable battery made from Ni-Cd cell. The capacity of the battery is 1.3 AH and is used for various cordless Makita products such as drills and flashlights. Examples of the product are such as Makita 6010D, ML 700, and other power tools with the same brand.
The original battery is made from nickel-cadmium, hence the abbreviation Ni-Cd. The ability to supply high surge current with low internal resistance makes this type of battery favorable in operating high power tools. The advantage of using Ni-Cd battery is that the self-discharge rate is lower which is at 20% per month. Basically it will be almost the same as when it is fully charged if you have not been using your power tool for a week. Plus the durability also includes not being easily damaged if the battery is under deep discharge. Some batteries such as Lithium Ion (Li-ion) battery will get damaged easily if it is in a deep discharge condition over a long period of time. The disadvantage of Ni-Cd battery is that if it is under a very high temperature, it will get damaged easily. This often occurs when the battery is over-charged. When the battery is charging, the temperature will be kept as low as possible from the process of charging. But when it is fully charged, it will overheat the battery causing it to be damaged easily.
Nowadays we can easily get batteries manufactured by other manufacturers for this battery’s replacement using nickel-metal hydride (Ni-Mh) and Li-ion which costs a lot cheaper than the original battery. This is because cadmium is very costly due to the durability and less internal resistance. However as I have mentioned above, Li-ion battery cannot be stored for too long under deep discharge and Ni-Mh battery have higher discharge rate of 30% per month under critical conditions. The original Makita 7000 battery is still preferable to be used to operate the power tools.
There are a few cautions to be taken to ensure the durability and lifetime of the battery. Ensure that the battery is not overcharged to avoid overheating it. Follow the instruction on the manual provided. Also, switch off the machine when not in use to also prevent from overheating the machine and the battery. Power tools temperature is easily risen because of the friction and the energy used to operate the machine.
Always make sure that you buy the original Makita 7000 battery to protect your power tools from getting damaged by unsuitable third party batteries.
